Kirkgate Market is a fantastic market with around 400 stalls selling specialist food and drink from all over the world - you can buy almost anything here. There's essentials from cheese to carrots available at prices which beat the bargains in the supermarkets to live lobsters on Fishmonger's Row. The lavish market was built to rival the Crystal Palace and has slender arches and curved glazing in the main hall with hundreds of dragons supporting the balcony and a roof of minarets and domes - a veritable temple of commerce. The M&S empire started here and there's many long-standing stalls. Today's traders are in the same tradition, from Matt Brake shouting out the merits of kiwi berries, the latest attraction on his family's two vegetable stalls, to the A J Afro-Caribbean outlet, with its plantains, Scotch bonnet peppers and Memphis Belle's funky clothes shop. There's a huge range of goods on sale including fashion, footwear, designer jeans and duvets offering excellent value for money - a market not to be missed! Find out more on their website. The indoor and outdoor markets are open 7 days a week 9am - 5pm. There's also a farmers' markets on the 1st Sunday of the month.
